LTL BILLING GUIDE
Unexpected LTL accessorial fee: what to check
Accessorial charges often depend on what actually happened at pickup or delivery. The fastest review starts by matching the billed service to the operational record.
1. Identify the exact fee
- Limited access
- Liftgate
- Residential
- Detention
- Appointment
- Redelivery
- Other carrier-specific accessorial
2. Check what was ordered
Compare the original quote, booking details and BOL to see whether the service was requested, disclosed or included before shipment.
3. Match the fee to what happened
Use POD, facility records, timestamps, emails and delivery notes to determine whether the billed service actually occurred.
4. Ask for the governing support
If the charge is unclear, ask the carrier for the event record and the tariff or rule they relied on. A useful dispute focuses on one specific mismatch rather than arguing that the invoice is simply too high.
