LTL BILLING GUIDE

How to dispute an LTL reclass

A reclass charge is not automatically an error. The useful question is whether the revised class is supported by the shipment facts and the carrier's evidence.

1. Compare the original quote to the final invoice

  • Original freight class
  • Final billed class
  • Difference in base rate and related charges
  • Any inspection or reclassification fee

2. Check the BOL and commodity description

Confirm what was declared at shipment: commodity, packaging, weight, dimensions, density and class. A weak or inaccurate description can make a carrier adjustment more difficult to challenge.

3. Ask for the carrier's support

  • Inspection record
  • Measured dimensions or density
  • Weight record if the reclass was tied to a reweigh
  • The rule or classification basis used

4. Build a narrow dispute

Identify the exact amount affected, attach the quote/BOL/invoice, include your evidence, and explain precisely why the revised class does not match the shipment facts.

5. Track the credit

A dispute is not finished when it is submitted. Track carrier responses, additional evidence requests, approval, and the final credit or refund.
